Teacher Appreciation Day May 13, 2009

This year, Teacher Appreciation Day was greater than ever. The P.I.E group organized the parents of SMN to show their appreciation to all the teachers. The event started with Mr. Howdy sharing a word of thanks on behalf of the
parents, then different parents handed out gifts to all the teachers. Even Jane (Grade 2) and Rebecca (Grade 3) shared their appreciation at the event. Afterwards, we all enjoyed food and conversation together. It was an amazing time of teachers and parents joining together and getting to know each other.
We want to thank all the parents for the gifts, the food, and especially all the care put into it. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. What a family!

Grade 10 Bali Trip May 4 - 8, 2009

This year’s Grade 10 set to the skies for the annual Bali Trip with Mr. Andreas, Ms. Temmy, and Mr. Johnson. We got to the airport in plenty of time (unlike last year) to enjoy this fabulous island experience.
We tackled team-building challenges on the Treetop Adventure Course. Pamela was the only girl to finish the expert course - way to go! We hit the rapids of the Ayung River with laughter and exhaustion. Stephen T. drove his team to final victory.
Our more educational experiences came when visited the Turtle Reserve where we got to handle LARGE snakes, iguanas, ugly fruit bats, and cool sea turtles. We also visited the Bali Cultural Center where we discovered how the Balinese people live, dance, and worship. They also treated us to a private 40 minute Kecak Performance.
This year we reached out with a hand of help and a heart of love as visited the Salam Orphanage. We collected money and bought school supplies and sports equipment, and gave them a cash donation. They performed for us and we sang for them; then we joined together and while some played basketball others had fun just playing and talking with them. When we returned, we wrote them cards and sent them pictures of our time together. We all agree that it was the most rewarding time of the trip.
Here’s what we have to say about the trip...

The most touching part was when they gave their hand made flowers to their mom and say their love the them…. showers of hug and kisses for their moms.
But the most yummy ones was allocated around the snack table. Thanks to all moms for their participation in this.

English Writing Assignment: How to Make a Sandwich, by David (5)

Is your tummy grumbling? Is your brother itching to eat? Well you can solve that problem by making a sandwich! First of all you need a variety of food for making the sandwich and I’ve already listed them for you:

-3 slices of bread (you can use any shape except circle, because it will be a burger if you do that!)
-tomatoes
-tuna
-tomato sauce
-smoked beef
-lettuce
-cheese
-mayonnaise
-egg
Okay! So, we’ve got that out of our way and now, let’s create!
First, put one slice of bread to start. Then cover it with some lettuce. Next, you pour over the mayonnaise and then cover it with that juicy smoked beef. Wow I’m starting to get hungry. So next, we squeeeeeze the tomato sauce onto the smoked beef. Then we put the second slice of bread which brings us to the second level of the process. Then we put some more lettuce and pour some more mayonnaise on it and put tuna on it too.
Next put the egg and cover it with the last slice of bread and voila! You’ve got a three leveled slice of bread sandwich and finally… Dig in!
Yummm….

From Parents, To Parents!

This past Friday, PIE hosted the first time ever, Parents Gathering Night at Summer Hill Residence. We had a nice turn out despite the short notice given to the parents. To those that made it to the gathering, thank you for taking the time from your busy schedules to join us.

Thanks to all parents who have contributed to the program. To recap the evening, we started off with a welcome speech by Mrs. Jeannie, followed with opening prayer led by Mrs. Ribka. Under the pavilion and candlelight, we enjoyed the delicious buffet organized by Mrs. Indri, while getting acquainted with each other. Towards the end of the evening, we viewed a PIE presentation by Mrs. Lily and laughed over pictures of past events.
Parents gave new ideas on possible future PIE events, on ways how parents could have better communication with the school, and discussed new information of SMN academic achievements. We agreed on having a regular informal meeting with the school outside of the school premises. All expenses will be shared among us. Parents have also suggested a varieties of activities that we can do for PIE. Closing discussion and prayer were led by Mr. Daniel and Mr. Budi.
Special thanks again for the parents that made this evening a success, and we invite more parents to come and join the gathering in the next school year!!!

Gr. 11 Students’ Reading Log

Year 11 does reading logs. This is where they read newspaper articles and comment on them. It helps them to keep up to date with what is happening in the world as well as help them to reflect and make connections to their learning experience at SMN.
Kerensa Johnston, English Teacher
① City High Schools Declare War on Smoking
Jakarta post, April 3/2009
Reading log by Zilka

City high schools declare war on smoking. There are 116 states, 62 vocational and 16 islamic high schools who signed the declaration to keep their schools free from cigarettes. Last time, the rules of no smoking at school were only in a form of banners and stickers. It doesn’t work at all. That kind of disciplinary action can not make the students loose their bad habits of smoking.
This time the declaration involved students, teachers, employees and the whole of the school. This time, they not only put banners or stickers at the school wall, but they held a seminar explaining the dangers of smoking. SMA 73 in North Jakarta produced new disciplinary rules. Students that were caught smoking at school have to pay Rp 50.000,-
I think this kind of activity is a positive action to make a change. The seminar that was held about smoking will also warn the students about how important it is to keep their bodies healthy. The students will get an understanding about the dangers of smoking and to protect the name of the school.
I think the seminar about smoking is important to educate people especially the young generation. When I went to Jakarta, there was a little boy smoking. The person who was standing beside this young boy asked what grade he was and the boy said fourth grade. I was so surprised. How can this very little boy be smoking? I think the government has to declare a war on smoking especially for teenagers. This is also benefitted for the image of this country itself.

② Minister: 10 NZ students likely have swine flu
Response to Swine Flu, By Stephanie Rusli.

After I read this article, honestly, I felt scared about this swine flu, because this virus will cause death. I think this virus is similar to SARS, and also bird flu. They don’t have the medicine yet to help people who caught these diseases. I just hope that the government in every country will take care of this problem because there are already people who have gotten this illness. All that we can do is keep our environment clean, so we will not get any diseases.
